Outcome : A news verifying platform that helps users verify news and stay informed to be able to form opinions and place themselves on the spectrum

Background

For this project, I used speculative design methods which mostly deal with assuming certain factors such as shaping your own realities, expecting your target audience to have certain qualities in them that would perhaps make your design work, and more.

The problem surrounds the context of fake news where people aren’t well informed on what is happening around the world. This leads to them not being able to form their opinion on what is right or wrong. Thus, it makes it difficult form them to place themselves on the political spectrum.

This also leads to them eventually ignoring the news leaving them unaware of the ongoings around them. To narrow the problem down further, I’ve taken India as the country for geographical clarity since most of my research is based on Indian news.

Objective

What to achieve

- A reality where people are able to differentiate between what is 'real' and 'fake'

- To get to a place where they can place themselves on the political spectrum

- To prepare users for elections in order to make informed decisions

How to achieve

- Creating a platform that enables users to verify news that they hear

- Keeping this a public-funded initiative

- Having fact checkers or reliable sources connected

- Providing background information about particular topics so that the user doesn't feel lost

Target Audience

The criteria chosen for this project looked at young adults, between the ages 16-24, residing in metropolitan areas. The reasons for choosing them is because this group of people has more access to information, especially through social media. It is also because people of this age group are just discovering the world and mostly find it challenging to form opinions in what they choose to believe. Moreover, there is a growing need for people to stay informed on current issues around the world.
